Nicole Kanayurak is Inupiaq from Utqiaġvik, Alaska, the northernmost point in the United States. She works on wildlife management at the North Slope Borough, a municipal government, where she helps ensure traditional subsistence harvests are practiced by assuring participation of local residents. Nicole graduated from Dartmouth College where she earned her Bachelor’s degree in environmental studies with a minor in Native American Studies. She earned her Master’s in Marine Affairs from the University of Washington School of Marine and Environmental Affairs. Nicole enjoys facilitating Indigenous co-management of natural resources in the Arctic and representing Inuit in Arctic Policy. As an advocate for Inuit, she was able to participate in health and wellbeing initiatives in the Arctic such as the Arctic Council initiative on “Reducing the Incidence of Suicide in Indigenous Groups.” Nicole is a member of the Fulbright Arctic Initiative where she is working on what resilient communities looks like in the Arctic.
