Ms Donatilla Kanimba has been actively involved in the disability movement for over 30 years. She is the Executive Director of the Rwanda Union of the Blind (RUB) and the current Second Vice President of the World Blind Union (WBU). Having lost her sight at the age of five, Ms Kanimba attended a boarding school for children with visual impairment in Thika, Kenya and later attended Nairobi University where she completed a Bachelor’s degree in arts (Sociology and government).
Ms Kanimba was instrumental in pushing for the ratification of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) in the country. Under her leadership, the Rwanda Union of the Blind also launched the Masaka Resource Centre for the Blind (MRCB) in the year 2000 and insured that the organisation is accessible to more persons with visual impairment by establishing RUB branches in all districts of the country. Under her leadership, RUB won the 2014 Human Rights prize awarded by Leitner Centre on International law and justice in the USA.
