Elmin Steyn chairs the Division of Surgery at the Faculty of Health Sciences of Stellenbosch University where she is Associate Professor of Surgery, Chief Specialist and Head of Surgery at Tygerberg Academic Hospital in Cape Town. She trained at Stellenbosch University and the Medical University of South Africa (now SMU) and is a registered trauma surgery subspecialist. At the Christiaan Barnard Memorial Hospital she is Trauma Director and heads the renal transplant program.
She serves on many professional bodies, is a member of the board of the Health Professions Council of SA and is the current president of the International Association of Trauma Surgery and Intensive Care. Elmin is the co-editor of several textbooks of trauma has been privileged to teach trauma care and trauma surgery in courses worldwide. She is passionate about injury and violence prevention in South Africa and improving trauma care in Africa. Elmin loves flying and collects art.
