Etheldreda Nakimuli-Mpungu MD, PhD is a Senior Lecturer and Psychiatric epidemiologist in the Department of Psychiatry at the Makerere University School of Medicine. Her research funded by Grand Challenges Canada and MQ Transforming Mental Health has focused on strengthening the evidence for culturally appropriate Group Support Psychotherapy (GSP) as a first line treatment for depression in people living with HIV.

Presently, her team is using the Training of Trainers model (TOT) to integrate GSP into routine primary care as a first line treatment for depression in rural remote areas in post-conflict northern Uganda. In 2016, this work earned her the Presidential National Independence Medal of Honor and the Elsevier Foundation Award for Early Career Women Scientists in the Developing World.
